House Republicans Go After Hunter

James Comer, Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has initiated a formal request for records from Hunter Biden and James Biden. The request aims to shed light on President Biden’s alleged involvement in his family’s business ventures. This is the first known instance of an official request for documents concerning the Biden family’s business dealings.

Comer emphasizes the significance of the investigation, stating that Hunter Biden, James Biden, and Eric Schwerin are central witnesses in the inquiry. He expresses his belief that the American public deserves to know the truth about the Biden family’s business dealings, including any potential influence peddling.

In a letter addressed to Hunter Biden, Comer alleges that evidence suggests that Hunter Biden conducted business deals with individuals connected to the Chinese Communist Party and received substantial payments from foreign entities without providing any known legitimate services. He further stresses the importance of transparency and accountability in this matter.

Biden Traps Republicans

Joe Biden, the 80-year-old President of the United States, ambled through the House gallery at the beginning of his address. Despite his advanced age, he looked as energetic as ever and was ready to engage with the audience. Biden is not known for his formal speaking skills, and his address was a mix of garbled phrases and sentence fragments. Nevertheless, he quickly turned the mood of the evening from painful to entertaining with his humor and wit.

Biden accused some Republicans of wanting to sunset Social Security and Medicare, drawing audible protests from the crowd. He responded to the accusations with a smile and a challenge, asking anyone who doubted his claims to contact his office for proof. Biden showed that he was able to unify different wings of his party, despite some opinions to the contrary. He introduced the parents of Tyre Nichols, who was killed in a police beating in Memphis, and spoke about his proposals to reduce police violence.

Despite the Republicans’ irritation, Biden maintained a positive and humorous tone throughout the evening. He congratulated the new House Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, and joked that he looked forward to working with him, even though he knew that Republicans would have little interest in his proposals to raise taxes on corporations and the wealthy.

The whole evening was a demonstration of the power and influence of the President of the United States, even with low approval ratings. It also showed that standards of decorum are highly fluid and have changed over time. In 2009, Joe Wilson, a Republican from South Carolina, interrupted President Obama’s speech to Congress by shouting “You lie.” This incident caused embarrassment, even among Republicans, and Wilson was forced to apologize.

Breach at Air Force One Base

On Monday, Joint Base Andrews in Maryland was the site of a security breach. At around 11:30 a.m., a man managed to gain access to a base housing area. However, a resident of the base took action and fired at the intruder. The security personnel then arrived and arrested the man.

Fortunately, there were no reports of any injuries or property damage as a result of the breach. Joint Base Andrews is a highly secure facility that houses a fleet of blue and white presidential aircrafts, including the infamous Air Force One. The base also houses Marine One and a “doomsday” 747 airplane that can serve as an airborne nuclear command and control center in case of an emergency.

This is not the first time that Joint Base Andrews has experienced a security breach. In February 2021, a man managed to pass a military checkpoint and get through secure fenced areas to enter a C-40, which is the military’s 737-equivalent aircraft that flies government officials. However, he was quickly arrested after an observant airman noticed the “mouse ears” cap he was wearing and became suspicious.

The incident is currently under investigation by law enforcement.

New Shocking Biden Investigation

House Republicans are planning to investigate the Biden administration’s response to the shooting down of a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon off the coast of South Carolina on Saturday. This investigation falls into a larger array of planned probes into the Biden administration’s military and foreign policy by the new GOP House majority, including the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in 2021.

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, stated that he will be demanding answers and holding the administration accountable for what he views as an “embarrassing display of weakness.” A committee spokesperson said that they are first looking for an in-depth briefing, and additional steps have yet to be determined. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) also released a statement demanding that Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin provide immediate answers and cooperate with Congress.

Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green (R-Tenn.) also slammed the administration’s response to the balloon and stated that his panel will continue demanding action and answers from the administration. The Pentagon first announced the existence of the balloon on Thursday, alleging it was being used to collect information on sensitive military sites, while Chinese officials claim it was a civilian weather balloon.

According to Bloomberg, U.S. officials were aware of the balloon when it entered American airspace on January 28th. Biden ordered the Pentagon to shoot down the balloon “as soon as possible” on Wednesday and told reporters that the best time to do so was when it was over water without causing damage to anyone on the ground.

Trump Solves What Biden Cannot

Trump has called for a suspected Chinese spy balloon flying over Montana to be shot down. He made the statement through his Truth Social website, saying “SHOOT DOWN THE BALLOON!”.

The Pentagon announced that they are tracking a “high-altitude surveillance balloon” that entered Montana airspace after flying over Canada and Alaska. They are confident that it belongs to China.

President Biden was reportedly advised against military options regarding the balloon by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the commander of the United States Northern Command (NORTHCOM). A senior defense official stated at a briefing that President Biden was “briefed and asked for military options” but it was the “strong recommendation” of the Joint Chiefs and NORTHCOM commander “not to take kinetic action due to the risk to safety and security of people on the ground from the possible debris field.”

NORTHCOM, which was formed in 2002, is responsible for homeland defense and has the mission to “plan, organize, and execute homeland defense” as stated on its website.

McConnell Attacks Own, Scott Hits back

Senator Rick Scott of Florida, who has been critical of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s leadership and strategy, recently spoke to CNN in an interview. In the interview, Scott expressed his disappointment in being removed from the powerful Commerce Committee by McConnell. Despite this setback, Scott stated that he would continue to do his job and focus on his 12-point plan, which he had released as a campaign year agenda.

Scott’s plan and challenge for the leader’s job had caused some tension among Republicans. He believed that the Senate Republicans needed to have clear ideas and fight over them, which is why he opposed McConnell’s leadership. This led to McConnell removing Scott, along with Senator Mike Lee of Utah, from the Commerce Committee.

Despite this setback, Scott remains confident in his ability to serve on the panel. He cited his background as the former CEO of one of the nation’s largest healthcare companies and his experience as the governor of Florida, the nation’s third-biggest state economy, as reasons for his suitability for the committee. Scott also mentioned that he can still work on issues related to the Commerce Committee through Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who serves as the panel’s ranking Republican.

Trump DeSantis Attacks Shielded By RNC

Republican senators are supporting Florida Governor Ron DeSantis against former President Trump’s efforts to prevent him from running for president in 2024.

Meanwhile, Trump is gaining support among Senate Republicans, signaling division in the GOP for the presidential primary. Republicans who see Trump as a hindrance to midterm candidates say it’s DeSantis’ decision to run and he doesn’t owe Trump any loyalty.

Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) says DeSantis would bring new blood to the race and is polling well. Cornyn laughed at Trump’s claim that DeSantis would be disloyal for running against him.

Republican senators also argue that Trump’s endorsement of DeSantis in 2018 shouldn’t stop him from running. Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) says multiple Republican candidates with Trump’s endorsement may run, even those in the president’s cabinet.

Ron DeSantis, the popular Florida governor, is facing opposition from former President Donald Trump in his potential run for the 2024 presidential race. Trump is claiming that it would be a “great act of disloyalty” for DeSantis to challenge him for the Republican nomination.

However, Republican senators are rallying to defend DeSantis and view Trump’s feud with the governor as an early sign of division in the GOP. They argue that it’s up to DeSantis to decide whether to run and that his 2018 endorsement from Trump should not prevent him from doing so.

Some senators, such as John Cornyn (R-Texas), even find humor in Trump’s assertion and believe that DeSantis would bring new blood to the race. The outcome of this feud will have a significant impact on the 2024 Republican presidential primary.
