Tooth be told: Picture day photographers are taking photo retouching too far.
A mother of an elementary school student is blasting the photography company responsible for arbitrarily photoshopping two front teeth onto her child’s school pictures without parental authorization.
“Why [did] his school [give] him teeth on his pictures,” questioned TikTok user @ManiRenae, from Compton, Calif., in her click-worthy TikTok communique. “Where are the originals???”
In the eye-popping post, which fetched more than 51,000 virtual views, the woman showcased a glossy print of her little boy — whose beaming smile featured a row of photoshopped pearly whites where his expelled baby teeth once stood.
After displaying the edited photos in the video, the mother asked her son to flash a smile for her camera, which revealed the existing empty spaces in his gumline.
“Y’all know y’all are wrong!” exclaimed the woman, scolding both the picture-day photographers and her child’s school administrators for the unsanctioned changes to his likeness.
And TikTok watchers were equally ticked off by the outrageous amendments.
“I would be so mad!! That’s childhood memories, kids [are] so cute with the two missing front teeth,” spat an incensed spectator.
“Nooo I would want a [sic] unedited one the missing teeth the best part,” agreed another infuriated follower.
Other observers recalled instances in which their own school picture were wrongfully modified to the photographer’s liking.
“They did that to me in 6th grade. I always smiled with my mouth closed then I got my ID and my ‘teeth’ were showing,” confessed a commenter.
“They literally removed my daughter’s braces from her photos. I was so mad,” a mother remembered.
Unfortunately, unapproved alternations to school photos are becoming a commonplace trend.
In May 2021, a Florida high school was embroiled in controversy after making edits to over 80 yearbook pictures of female students without their consent.
Later that year, in October, a mother of a deaf son virally blew the whistle on a school photography company for erasing her toddler’s hearing aids from his portraits.
“These are my son’s hearing aids. They help him hear, they are a part of who he is,” the mom said in her TikTok outcry, with more than 196,000 views. “For them to edit them out is stripping away a part of who he is.”
